The AIMS Fund

An initiative of the Advancing Injectable Markets for Sustainability (AIMS) project, the AIMS Fund equips local nonprofit organizations with technical assistance and financial resources to drive forward key activities that support countries to advance toward achieving a mature, sustainable market for DMPA-SC self-injection (SI). Resources and learnings from AIMS Fund awards will be disseminated with support from AIMS to strengthen DMPA-SC/SI market development globally.

Projects that receive funding will be:

• Discrete, high-impact, and designed to advance introduction or scale up of DMPA-SC/SI.
• Designed to kickstart momentum in new countries and service delivery channels (including private sector) or accelerate access in countries that have introduced DMPA-SC/SI.
• Designed to utilize or build sustainable processes, systems, and resources for scale-up.
• Designed to leverage best practices and proven, evidence-based approaches or demonstrate novel approaches to increase cost-effectiveness or efficiency in addressing known challenges.
• Implemented by local not-for-profit nongovernmental organizations.
• Government-endorsed (e.g., by a relevant department involved in family planning) if the proposal is focused on the public sector.

The Fund focuses on the three key goals listed below. Applicants must select one goal and implement activities in a country eligible for that category.

Goal 1. Support DMPA-SC/SI market entry in new countries
Eligible countries: Angola, Cameroon, Myanmar, Nepal

AIMS strategic priorities for Cycle 2:

• Angola: Advocacy for SI authorization, development of national SI scale-up plan, and establishment of an SI scale-up coordination mechanism.
• Cameroon: Expansion of SI services to new geographies following MOH approval for SI scale-up.
• Myanmar: Limited SI introduction project to inform approaches for national scale-up planning.
• Nepal: Development of SI scale-up plan and establishment of an SI scale-up coordination mechanism.

Goal 2. Support DMPA-SC/SI public sector market advancement for countries in intro/launch and early growth phases
Eligible countries: Bangladesh, Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, Senegal

AIMS strategic priorities for Cycle 2:

• Bangladesh: Expansion of SI services to new geographies and client awareness raising/demand generation following MOH development of a scale-up plan.
• Burundi: Expansion of SI services to new geographies and client awareness raising/demand generation.
• Ethiopia: Advocacy for opening DMPA-SC/SI services through the community channel/expansion to rural areas; support HMIS update to include SI indicators/LMIS update to include DMPA-SC.
• Ghana: Reinforce/strengthen service delivery in public facilities and client awareness raising/demand generation.
• Madagascar: Innovative approaches to address provider hesitancy on SI (demonstration project)
• Senegal: Innovative approaches to address provider hesitancy on SI (demonstration project).

Goal 3. Advance commercial sector introduction and scale up for DMPA-SC/SI
Eligible countries: Bangladesh, Ghana, Madagascar, Nigeria, Tanzania

Countries eligible for an award under this goal either have a commercial product available currently or a commercial product is expected to be available by January 2027. Concepts related to introduction or scale-up of DMPA-SC/SI in the private sector must focus on a fully commercial (non-subsidized) product.

AIMS strategic priorities: Development of task-shifting/task-sharing policy for pharmacies or drug shops, support introduction in new channels, client demand generation, support creation of a public-private sector coordination group or subcommittee to support DMPA-SC/SI introduction in the private sector.

Funding parameters 
AIMS will award successful proposals up to $200,000 for a 9-month award period. Up to eight grants will be awarded this funding cycle. Not every eligible country will receive an award.

Ineligible activities:

• Funds spent directly on the purchase/procurement of DMPA-SC.
• Routine service delivery activities such as paying providers, supporting regular activities that are expected to be done by a health facility/provider.
• Research requiring approval by an ethical or external review committee.

Award process 
The AIMS Fund process is a competitive funding cycle open only to local non-profit organizations within eligible countries. To be considered for an AIMS Fund award, applicants must review the AIMS Fund overview and guidance webinar recording and complete and submit the concept note template linked below in MS Word. Applications that are submitted with blank fields or in any format other than Word (e.g., PDF) will not be accepted.

Submitted concept notes will be screened for completion and eligibility. Priority will be given to concept notes that propose activities that are aligned with AIMS strategic priorities. Selected applicants will be invited to immediately move into a six-week design sprint to collaboratively develop a full proposal with support from an AIMS project technical advisor, and AIMS will provide technical support during collaborative project planning and implementation.
